The Importance Of Creating A Good First Impression

Now I realise this is showing my age, but when I went to primary school the main focus was on the three “R’s” – Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

Okay, l realise only one of those subjects actually begins with the letter “R”, but I didn’t start the phrase.

Anyway, every day we would sit at our little wooden desks with the hinged lids, where so many children had sat before us, and practice our writing on small black boards with white chalk.  When we’d shown our completed work to the teacher, we’d rub it out with our small blackboard rubber.

As we got older, we wrote in “proper” books with ink pens, having first dipped their nibs into the inkwells found in our desks.  Depending on the slant of our writing and our skill with the pen, we often had to soak up the excess liquid with our allocated sheet of pink blotting paper.

Daily we would go through our times tables, do our sums, and recite the alphabet. To this day I can still say it backwards!

We were also taught proper grammar and punctuation, and weekly we would have spelling tests for words we had been requested to learn at home.

Most of us did, and usually, by the time we left primary school, the majority of us could read, write, and add up in our heads without the need for calculators and spell checkers, (which was just as well because they didn’t exist in those days!)

It was all pretty laborious, but provided a good foundation.

modern schoolFast forward five decades and everything is about speed.

According to a report on the BBC News this morning, many people are ruining their chances of ever getting an interview for the few jobs currently available because of the appalling spelling, grammar and punctuation on their CV’s.

It’s creating a bad first impression, and some potential employees are taking the attitude if the prospect can’t even be bothered to check their initial application form, then it probably reflects their whole attitude to work and life in general.

This even applies to university graduates, and one building society has even sent staff for English lessons, because the bosses couldn’t understand the internal memos written by their graduate employees.

So, what’s this got to do with this blog post you might ask?

Well…

… it’s firmly believed if you want to be successful as an internet marketer, you need to get your products out fast. It’s that old “money likes speed” thing, and after all, it’s no good having a brilliant idea if it’s just in your head, is it?

One phrase you’ll often hear is,  “You don’t have to get it right – you just have to get it going”.

I understand that, but I still like to see things written in proper English and presented well, because it’s certainly true, “You only get one chance to make a first impression”.

Guess I’m just showing my age!

Another of Rachel Rofe compilations Thorns To Be Thankful For: Personal Stories Of Overcoming Hard Times is a mixture of Thorns To Be Thankful For.1inspirational personal stories, and my chapter is about my son Jodi, who has autism.

Again, this was an instant best seller when it was launched in February 2014.

Here’s the description –

One of the greatest things about being human is that we get to experience a wide range of experiences.      Sure, sometimes we’re hit with low periods that make us question everything. We also have the high periods – the feeling of new love, the first warm day out of winter; the feeling you get when your favorite song comes on the radio.
While they don’t feel like it at the time, low periods certainly have their value. They make way for revelations, wisdom, rebirth.
Personally, I love to operate under the belief that “everything happens for our highest good”. When “bad” things are happening, I like to think that it’s because it’s making way for a great learning lesson or an even bigger blessing.
That’s what this book is about. You’re going to read stories of people overcoming mind-bending hardship and coming to the other side much stronger.Buy Now
Some of the things people in this book went through are unthinkable. But they got through it – and when you read, hopefully you realize that you can get through anything too. This book will help you peek into the fabric of peoples’ souls. You’ll hear their stories, feel inspired, and realize that we’re all in this together. It is my hope that as tough things come up in your life, you’ll think back to a story you read here and realize that there’s hope on the other side.

An Attitude of Gratitude!

Please Listen! As a published author, I am currently in the process of recording audio versions of all my books.

They will be uploaded to ACX and be available on Audible.com and Audible.co.uk. Some already are.

Since I’m narrating them myself, I need a quiet place, because the microphone has an annoying habit of picking up every noise.

Although our house is set back a bit from the road, to make it as quiet as possible, I decided to use the bedroom at the back of the house to record my books, and so far I’ve managed to complete ten of them.

I have four to go.

It’s been really hot in UK recently, and the other night I couldn’t sleep so I decided it would be an ideal time to do a bit of narration.

I recorded a few chapters and then the dawn chorus began, with the birds singing and chirping exceptionally loudly, or so it seemed.

Anyway, I gave up and decided I’d give it another go the next morning before the birds woke up.

That worked fine for a short while and then we had a thunder storm with torrential rain, which beat against the windows and clattered on the conservatory roof, so once again I had to stop recording.

A few minutes ago, in the middle of the day, I decided to have another try.

Everything was going well until suddenly I heard a loud banging noise like metal being hit with a huge hammer. It seems there is work being done on the railway line close by so it’s likely to continue all day.

I guess I’ll have to put my recording on hold yet again.

Now, you’d think I’d be a bit annoyed or frustrated with all this, wouldn’t you, but surprisingly I’m not.

Actually, all I can really think about is how grateful I am to be able to hear!

How about you?

Ida Godbold – 100 Years and Counting!

Ida Godbold paperback coverThis book is about my Grandma Godbold and was written for her 100th birthday.

It doesn’t matter who you talk to, everyone thinks their generation was the best, and even those who experienced tremendous hardships recall mostly the good bits.

My Grandma is no exception.

Whilst she’s survived two world wars and been surrounded by lots of death, endured years of hard work without the modern conveniences we now take for granted, she still maintains she’s probably seen the best in mankind.

She’s helped bring babies into the world, and washed and lain dead people out, something common for many people of her generation.Buy Now

She comes from an era when people were strong, resilient and didn’t just care about material things, but friends and neighbours too. They were proud, independent and hard working. They didn’t rely on handouts, didn’t think the world owed them any favours and when things were broke, they fixed them.

That went for relationships as well as “stuff”, and it’s a philosophy many of us would do well to adopt.

This is the story of my Grandma Godbold, and is based on the conversations we’ve had together over the years. Whilst it will be of most interest to her family, Ida Godbod, is a remarkable woman in my opinion.

She’s part of my history.

Indeed, but for her I wouldn’t be here to tell this tale, and you wouldn’t be reading this blog post!

Crabby Old Man – Please Share This Poem!

Last night I went to see the film Quartet.   It’s about a home for retired musicians and was funny and sad.  It’s also very true, because we all age and there’s nothing we can do about it.

Unfortunately, when people get old, often they’re treated differently.

They say life is for the young, and it does seem when you get to a certain age, you do become invisible or a nuisance.

As long as you’re active and have your mind it’s okay, but beware when things start to break down.

It’s a real concern.

Anyway, Crabby Old Man  is an absolutely beautiful poem, which I do hope you’ll share.

I received it in an e-mail so I cannot verify the story, but apparently when an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in North Platte, Nebraska, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value. Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, they found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.   One nurse took her copy to Missouri.

The old man’s sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas edition of the News Magazine of the St. Louis Association for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem. And this little old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this ‘anonymous’ poem winging across the Internet.

CRABBY OLD MAN

What do you see nurses? – What do you see?
What are you thinking.- when you’re looking at me?
A crabby old man – not very wise,
Uncertain of habit – with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles his food – . and makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice – ‘I do wish you’d try!’
Who seems not to notice – the things that you do.
And forever is losing – A sock or shoe?

Who, resisting or not – lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding – The long day to fill?
Is that what you’re thinking? – Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse -. you’re not looking at me.

I’ll tell you who I am – . As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding – . as I eat at your will.
I’m a small child of Ten – . with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters – who love one another.

A young boy of Sixteen – . with wings on his feet.
Dreaming that soon now – a lover he’ll meet.
A groom soon at Twenty – my heart gives a leap.
Remembering, the vows – that I promised to keep.

At Twenty-Five, now – I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide – And a secure happy home.
A man of Thirty – My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other – With ties that should last.

At Forty, my young sons – have grown and are gone,
But my woman’s beside me – to see I don’t mourn.
At Fifty, once more, babies play ’round my knee,
Again, we know children – My loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me – my wife is now dead.
I look at the future – shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing – young of their own.
And I think of the years – and the love that I’ve known.

I’m now an old man – and nature is cruel.
Tis jest to make old age .-look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles – grace and vigor, depart.
There is now a stone – where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass – a young guy still dwells,
And now and again – my battered heart swells.
I remember the joys – I remember the pain.
And I’m loving and living – life over again.

I think of the years, all too few – gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact – that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people – open and see.
Not a crabby old man – Look closer – see ME!!

Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within. We will all, one day, be there, too!

Drive Safely – Two Top Tips For Driving In The Rain

I don’t know about you but I hate driving at night, in the fog, or in the pouring rain.  Come to think about it, I don’t really like driving at all.

Maybe I should get a chauffeur?

Anyway, I was sent these pieces of information about driving in the rain the other day and whilst I have to admit at this point in time, I haven’t actually tried either, I thought I’d better share, just in case.

They were sent to me in an e-mail from a person I know, like and trust, so it’s up to you whether you take note or not, and I’ll post them, just as I received them .rain

 Tip 1

HOW TO ACHIEVE GOOD VISION IN A HEAVY DOWNPOUR

We are not sure why it is so effective; just try this method when it rains heavily.  This method was told by a Police friend who had experienced and confirmed it.

It is useful…even driving at night.

Most of the motorists would turn on HIGH or FASTEST SPEED of the wipers during heavy downpour, yet the visibility in front of the windshield is still bad.

In the event you face such a situation, just put on your SUNGLASSES (any model will do), and miracles – all of a sudden, your visibility in front of your windshield is perfectly clear, as if there is no rain.

Make sure you always have a pair of SUNGLASSES in your car.

You are not only helping yourself to drive safely with good vision, but also might save your friend’s life by giving him this idea.

Try it yourself and share it with your friends!

Amazingly, you still see the drops on the windshield, but not the sheet of rain falling.

You can see where the rain bounces off the road.

It works to eliminate the “blindness” from passing cars, or the “kickup” if you are following a car in the rain.

Tip 2

RAIN, ICE AND YOUR CRUISE CONTROL

driving in the rainAnother good tip: A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago. It was raining, though not excessively when her car suddenly began to hydro-plane and literally flew through the air.

She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence!

When she explained to the Police Officer what had happened, he told her something that every driver should know – NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON.

She thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain, but the Police Officer told her that if the cruise control is on, your car will begin to hydro-plane when the tyres lose contact with the road, and your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an aeroplane.

She told the Officer that was exactly what had occurred.

The Officer said this warning should be listed, on the driver’s seat sun-visor – NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE ROAD IS WET OR ICY, along with the airbag warning.

We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed – but we don’t tell them to use the cruise control only when the road is dry.

The only person the accident victim found who knew this, (besides the Officer), was a man who’d had a similar accident, totalled his car and sustained severe injuries.

NOTE: Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow you to set the cruise control when the windshield wipers are on.

As, I said, I haven’t tried these and don’t know if they’re true but they might be worth investigating.  They both sound sensible and feasible to me, so if you agree, please pass this message on.

You never know, you might just be saving a life!

Pure Leverage – Why Does Joel Therien Keep Giving Away Expensive Luxury Shiny Red Cars?

BMWWhy does Joel Therien keep giving away expensive red cars?

When I first met him  in 2010, he was giving away his shiny red BMW.

Well, I don’t suppose he was actually giving it away, because prior to the presentation there had been a contest and the person to bring in the most new members to GVO won the car.

In case you don’t know, that’s the amazing hosting company he set up in 2000 (previously known as Kiosk)and which he relaunched under a new name.

(If you want to know more you can read my book – The GVO Story or you can listen to my interview with him where we do actually discuss his car).

Tissa_and_JeanAnyway, the lucky winner was Tissa Godivitane, a lovely tall guy who had difficulty even getting into the car, yet alone driving it.

However, he clearly deserved the prize and was a popular choice, because as I say, he’s a really nice chap.

Fast forward, almost three years and Joel is now giving away the car he’d bought to replace his beloved BMW and I hear his children aren’t too impressed.

You see it’s a shiny red….

Ferrari F430 Spider!

Why is he doing this?

NO – it’s NOT because the colour is fading (red is notorious for it on cars), but he’s just launched Pure Leverage, and is running another contest to get new members.

Mind you, I personally don’t think he needs to run a contest to get members because Pure Leverage is an incredibly easy to use marketing system which ANYONE and EVERYONE who wants to do effective marketing online needs.

You see there’s nothing else that can compare to it in terms of reliability and cost.

For just $24.95 you can get …

  • 100 seat personal conference suite
  • an authority blog
  • 100 auto responder campaigns
  • video e-mail service

The auto responder service alone would cost you far more than that elsewhere because Pure Leverage allows you to have 10,000 leads before it charges you extra, and you certainly can’t get a personal 100 seat conference suite where you can hold video, audio and text chats, stream videos and powerpoints, share your screen, use a white board, upload and download files and save the sessions for anywhere close to that price.

Not bad, eh?

You can see why I say it’s a marketing system ANYONE and EVERYONE needs!

Joel doesn’t stop there though.

He’s not just a hosting provider, but an internet and network marketer so the insight he has into the online industry is pretty extensive.  His list of trusted expert contacts is phenomenal.

He KNOWS what people WANT and NEED, so to cater to EVERYONE he has made Pure Leverage a business opportunity for those people who want it.

You can, if you wish, become a reseller, for an additional $19.97 per month, OR $199.70 if you care to make an annual payment and save yourself nearly $40.

That means IF you introduce someone to Pure Leverage you can get 100% commission on your direct referrals …

for LIFE!

It doesn’t even stop there though, because you get commission on your direct referrals’, direct referrals too …

…for LIFE

I know what you’re thinking – “It’s one of those Pyramid Schemes”, aren’t you?

Come on, you can admit it, but it’s a win-win situation for EVERYONE.

If you introduce Pure Leverage to someone and they INVEST in the product, they will SAVE a lot of MONEY on the tools and services, compared to what they would have to pay elsewhere, so obviously they’ll be HAPPY.

You’ll be happy too if you’re a reseller because you’ll earn commission from that referral for as long as he or she remains a customer of Pure Leverage.

Now, if that referral is so happy with Pure Leverage, he or she wants to also become a reseller, you’ll also benefit from any referrals he or she makes.  That means you’ll be even happier and will want to encourage them to earn lots and lots of money by making lots and lots of referrals which will make even more people really really happy.

You won’t mind that they could potentially earn much more than you because you’re here to make people happy..

…right?

So, now I’ve told you the reason Joel is giving away his bright red shiney Ferrari, you’ll understand why people are promoting this so madly and why someone is going to be really, really, really happy at the end of the competition.

Just hope it’s someone short like me this time (Ha! Ha!).

Of course, whoever it is, I don’t suppose Joel’s children will be too pleased, but I’m sure he’ll find an even more shiny, luxurious, expensive  car to replace it.

Not sure if it will be red this time though, but I’m guessing if you watch this space in about two to three years time, you might find out.

What do you think?

Anyway, if you want to check out the Pure Leverage great Ferrari Giveaway – go here
