Today is the end of an era, at least if you live in UK.

Woolworths is closing down!

The company has been operating for 99 years, and everyone,I’m sure, has bought something from the shop at some time. From clothing to DIY, kitchen to bathroom, stationery to confectionary, Woolworths sold it all and it wasn’t too expensive.

I’ve seen many changes in our local branch, but still fondly remember the broken biscuit counter in the oldest shop.I loved it. You could buy anything there. It  sold a bit of everything, and  that has been its downfall.

I was thinking about that today and the lesson the demise of such a British institution relates to my attempts at internet marketing.

It’s quite simple really – lack of focus.

Until today, I have been working several hours each day in my business, and just like Woolworths, which tried to sell everything, I’ve tried  to do EVERYTHING, ……………but I can’t.

It’s not that I’m not willing to learn everything, but there simply isn’t the time.

One of the things every successful marketer will tell you, and one which my mentors, Michael Cheney and Alex  Jeffreys keep affirming, is you need to outsource certain tasks and focus on those things you enjoy and are good at.

So, today I’ll be making two lists. The first will determine what needs to be done to build and maintain a successful  business, and the second will contain everything I could outsource, either because I can’t (yet) do it or would prefer not to.

It will be hard for me because I’m used to being in control, but it’s  the only way forward.

Hopefully, if I then concentrate on fewer things I’ll get better results and won’t end up like Woolworths!

Jean
