Here's my absolute favourite company - GVO - hosting with a difference!

Unless, you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks, you’ll be aware of numerous mentions of both Swine Flu and Michael Jackson. No doubt, you’ve become almost immune to both.

However, this is important.

The other day I received a security alert from the company who protect my computers from the horrible sneaky spyware, malware, viruses etc, which some unscrupulous individuals take pleasure in sending.

I was amazed just how low some opportunistic people stoop.

Apparently, they cash in on whatever happens to be the current topic of conversation, register domain names related to it and then start to push malware.

I’m told there’s one company who have a PDF for sale for $19.95, which documents how to deal with swine flu. It recommends certain Chinese herbs, which of course you can get from them.

The risk is HIGH though because I’m told, you could get scammed not only of your money but also your identity.

The advice from my security provider is -  Don’t buy anything from sites you’re not familiar with, and if you start to receive e-mails from people you don’t know regarding the swine flu epidemic, DELETE them immediately.

You can get help FREE from http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/index.htm

Now, at the risk of sounding opportunistic myself, here’s a video I made about Swine Flu earlier. Yes, it is me talking and Yes, I do make a recommendation, but there’s a lot of educational material in there too.

So, where does the late Michael Jackson fit into this tale?

Well, the same security company have advised me of a virus with his name. The file is Michael_www.google.com.exe and has apparently been distributed through photos-google.com, and possibly photo-msn org, facebook-photo.net and orkut-images.com

It seems this is a MEDIUM risk, but as techie language and I just don’t go together, I’ll repeat what I’ve been told and you can make of it what you will.

Here’s what happens.

“If you run Michael_www.google.com.exe it drops files named reptile.exe and windup.exe, which are backdoor IRC bots, and which display a fake error message dialog box- “Picture Cannot Be Displayed”

Once a backdoor is installed you are open to many more attacks and run the risk of losing personal information.”

The ADVICE is this -

  • Be sceptical of links and sites that play on hot news topics
  • Don’t open e-mails that contain attachments you’re not expecting
  • Don’t click on links in e-mails that promise info or pictures of Michael Jackson
  • and, obviously, keep your computer protection up to date and run regular scans.

Hope that information helps protect you from any kind of virus – computer or otherwise!

    Take care!
